Isabella’s journey: reflections on an unforgettable gap experience in Sestri Levante

Ciao! I’m Isabella, a 23-year-old from Toronto, Canada, and I recently wrapped up my incredible gap experience in Italy. This is the final part of my journey, where I reflect on my time in Sestri Levante and share how it changed my life.

Spending a month in Sestri Levante was nothing short of amazing, but eventually, I had to go back home. And even though my time in Italy came to an end, the lessons, friendships, and memories I made will stay with me forever. Looking back, this experience exceeded all my expectations. I had no idea how many incredible people I would meet, how many beautiful places I would see, and how many new experiences I would have!

Of course, I also didn’t expect how much Italian I would learn! But beyond that, I learned so much about myself. I got to explore my interests and step outside of my comfort zone in a completely new and beautiful place. There was quite literally an adventure waiting for me every day. And because of this, I grew in confidence and gained a greater appreciation for life. What’s more, I also left with a much deeper connection to my Italian roots.

But perhaps the most unexpected and wonderful part of this experience are the friendships I made. I still keep in touch with so many of my classmates, teachers, and local friends! The connections I made are something I truly cherish. And even though we all came from different backgrounds, they make me feel like a part of Italy will always be with me.

All in all, I would absolutely do this experience again and recommend it to any friend—or to all of you! My advice? Just do it. There is so much out there to explore, and trying new experiences is what makes life worth living. No matter your age or background, it’s never too late to follow your passions and step into the unknown.
