My name is Ariane, and I am a French Canadian with distant Italian roots (I’m a fourth generation). I live in the suburbs of the Greater Montreal area and am a mother of two adult children: a 28-year-old daughter and a 26-year-old son. I’m not yet a grandmother, and to be honest I’m not quite ready for that chapter yet!
My mother tongue is French, and I speak good English; with more practice, I could consider myself bilingual. Also, I can get by in Italian!
I chose to come to Italy to reconnect with my Italian roots and explore a country that has fascinated me since childhood.
While my family is originally from Basilicata, I have always felt a deep connection to Naples, especially Castellammare di Stabia.
This city has allowed me to discover the vibrant nature of the Neapolitans—their dynamism, warmth, and joy for life. I love their gruff yet generous character; they are passionate people, just like me. And Naples is an authentic, warm, and fascinating city, where every corner reveals a new facet of Italy. With its historical heritage and stunning landscapes, I was charmed. It was love at first sight.
During my recent travels to the Naples area, I mostly stayed in the suburbs and felt I hadn’t fully experienced the Naples community. I chose to take a language course in Naples exactly for that reason; I wanted a deeper immersion in the city, and of course, I wanted to learn Italian too. Other than improving my Italian and learning more about Italian culture, I had no specific expectations. I was open to all possibilities!
During my time in Italy, I mostly visited Naples and its surroundings, though I realized there is still so much left to explore! I wasn’t residing in Naples, however I managed to maximize my experience by participating in excursions organized by the school, as well as exploring on my own or with fellow students.
I also reconnected with friends from the coast of Sorrento and made new connections. But, above all, my trip was relaxing —I fully embraced the essence of il dolce far niente.
I adored spending time in Procida and Ischia. The tranquility and beauty of these islands allowed me to unwind and feel free, almost as if I was on vacation within a vacation! What’s more there is so much rich history and countless monuments to discover that I can’t recall all the names of what I visited!
I fondly remember the fish and seafood, especially octopus, as well as the fresh pasta from Gragnano and the delicious pizza from Naples. The delightful pastries and, of course, the coffee were also unforgettable!
One of the most memorable moments was showing my friends the coast of Sorrento and realizing that I was truly in the right place.
I also cherished the time spent at school and the activities with the teachers and fellow students. I discovered more about the history of the region and plan to continue learning and sharing this knowledge with those around me. Who knows? Perhaps I’ll become a tour guide to share my passion for the greater Naples area with others—an exciting prospect for someone nearing retirement in January 2025.
One challenge I faced was thinking and speaking in Italian. I still struggle a little bit to express my thoughts clearly and, while I understand and know many words, sometimes putting them into context can make me forget them. But I know this is part of the learning process, so I remain hopeful!
Absolutely! Naples is intensely experienced and embodies that sweet idleness typical of the South, which resonates with my personality!
