Why learn Italian? 6 reasons to learn the Italian language

August 21, 2024

The world is getting smaller, and learning another language isn't just about talking to people anymore. It's a key to unlocking a culture's history, traditions, and even job options around the globe.

If you want to dive into the heart of Europe, Italian is a fantastic choice. The language is indeed famous for its cultural heritage, melodious sound, and major impact on art, music, and of course, food! And while it may not be the absolute most studied language, Italian is still quite popular (it ranks 4th among all languages; a pretty big achievement for a language that’s not spoken worldwide, isn’t it?), especially in the US where college students are signing up for Italian classes 20% faster than any other language.

So, why are people learning Italian? And why should you, too, learn the Italian language?

1. Discovering one of the most beautiful country in the world

The very first reason is Italy, one of the most beautiful countries in the world. And it doesn’t stop at its beauty; Italy boasts indeed the most UNESCO World Heritage sites of any nation and many more cultural and historical landmarks that will leave you speechless. I bet that you too have dreamt, at least once, about traveling to Florence, Rome, Venice, or Naples to immerse in the lifestyle, but you should always remember that you can find breathtaking surprises everywhere (even in the smaller cities).

And how can you live the real Italian experience without speaking even a bit of the local language? It might sound obvious, but people in Italy speak Italian and only rarely do they speak English or other languages well enough to talk to tourists. That’s why the Italian language is the best and most effective way to communicate with the locals and discover the true beauty of the country. Remember: even just the basics can help you start a conversation with people living in the cities you’ll visit and that could recommend you their favorite restaurant or a hidden gem to add to your itinerary. And you want to make your journey as unique as you can, don’t you?

2. Immersing yourself in Italy’s artistic and musical legacy

Italian is (almost surely) the language that is most deeply connected to the world of  art and culture. Its influence is found everywhere: from painting to literature, from cuisine to music, Italian vocabulary has been integrated and normalized in most languages over the world.

Why’s that? The country has always been fertile ground for creativity. Since the grandeur of ancient Rome, passing through the artistic brilliance of Renaissance Florence, to fashion and interior design trends of contemporary Milan, countless artists have fostered the very essence of Italian culture giving birth to opera and classical music, to the most famous design trends, and to the most beloved foods and wines. And even nowadays, they continue to inspire stunning design and handcrafted artistry.

For anyone appreciating Italian art and culture in all its aspects, understanding Italian unlocks an even deeper appreciation. Classic pizza names, the language of coffee brewing, the specialized vocabulary of classical music, and much more all remain Italian words, all because Italy provided the very language that shaped their unique vocabularies.

3. Opening doors to diverse career opportunities

In industries such as fashion, design, luxury car, football, or haute cuisine, Italian is not only a useful means of communication but also a powerful tool for professional growth and unlocking exciting career paths. And the usefulness of this language isn’t limited to only “fancy” sectors. Fluency in Italian can open new doors also in exports or, simply enough, to become a foreign language teacher.

But the benefits of learning Italian extend far beyond renowned Italian names or teaching jobs. With the business landscape becoming increasingly global and companies collaborating across borders,  multilingualism is now highly valued by employers. For this reason, proficiency in Italian (and all other languages as well) will position you for higher-paying, more prestigious jobs!

4. Learning additional Romance languages

For language enthusiasts, Italian offers a unique advantage – it's a springboard to mastering other Romance languages. Think of Italian as the Rosetta Stone of Southern Europe, sharing a rich linguistic heritage with Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Romanian. These languages all descend from Latin, creating a remarkable level of similarity in vocabulary and grammar. Imagine learning Italian and suddenly recognizing a familiar word in a Spanish sentence, or understanding the basic structure of a French phrase. It's like having a built-in cheat sheet for unlocking multiple languages!

So, if you ever start learning another language (as long as it’s a Romance language, of course) this shared ancestry makes learning significantly easier. No more struggling through verb conjugations or tricky vocabulary. Italian grammar will equip you with the foundation of most Romance languages and the vocabulary overlaps extensively, with countless cognates – words that share a common ancestor and retain a similar meaning and sound. For example, the Italian word for "water" is "acqua," remarkably close to the Spanish "agua" and the French "eau."

By mastering Italian, you gain a head start in deciphering these languages, accelerating your learning journey and opening doors to a world of rich cultures!

5. Tracing back your Italian heritage

For those with Italian heritage, learning the Italian language offers more than just communication – it's a bridge to your family's heritage. Learning Italian will become a transformative journey of self-discovery and will allow you to converse directly with your Italian relatives, bypassing the limitations of translation and forging deeper bonds.

Proficiency will also open doors to exploring your family history in a whole new light. Historical records, family documents, heartfelt letters penned by loved ones – they will all be within your grasp!

What more, learning Italian empowers you to become a custodian of your family's cultural traditions. You’ll be able to share cherished recipes passed down through generations or teach your children Italian lullabies or traditional folk songs, ensuring these cultural gems are not lost with time. Fluency in Italian will definitely allow you to actively participate in and preserve these traditions, weaving them into the fabric of your own family life and ensuring they continue to resonate for generations to come!

6. Discovering the beauty of the language

The allure of Italian goes beyond words. It's a language renowned for its musicality and its gentle touch: almost a symphony, a language that poets and dreamers have long celebrated.

Throughout history, many figures have talked about Italian's unique beauty. From James Howell declaring it "the best composed language in terms of fluency and smoothness" to Thomas Mann saying that “angels in the sky speak Italian", the language has long been renowned for its evocative power. And for a more modern quote, Elizabeth Gilbert, in “Eat, Pray, Love” describes how “we all want to speak Italian because we love the way it makes us feel” and “no language was ever more perfectly ordained to express human emotions.”

On top of that, while some languages may have a reputation for being complex and intimidating, Italian offers a gentler approach. Yes, there might be initial hurdles like the subjunctive, but the melodic rhythm itself aids memorization.

All in all, why should you start learning Italian right now?

The decision to learn Italian transcends practical considerations—it embodies a commitment to cultural immersion, professional advancement, and personal enrichment. Whether motivated by a passion for art and history, career aspirations, or a desire to connect with your own roots, mastering Italian opens a world of opportunities and experiences uniquely shaped by Italy's rich cultural heritage and global influence.

So, why not embark on the journey to learn Italian today? Whether exploring ancient ruins or indulging in culinary delights, mastery of Italian enriches the human experience, fostering connections that transcend borders and celebrating the enduring legacy of Italian culture and creativity!
