One of the most crucial initial hurdles you'll encounter during your new life in Italy is obtaining your codice fiscale, a unique tax code that acts as your personal identification number while in the country.

What is a codice fiscale and why do you need one?

The codice fiscale is a 16-character alphanumeric code assigned to people in Italy. It serves as a vital identification number for various essential tasks, including:

Essentially, obtaining a codice fiscale will pave your way for a smooth and integrated experience in Italy, allowing you to unlock doors to financial independence, healthcare access, and daily necessities.

Who needs a codice fiscale?

Anyone staying in Italy for an extended period of time will need a codice fiscale. This includes:

  • Non-residents with a valid passport who plan to stay in Italy for more than 90 days.
  • Individuals with a valid residence permit, regardless of their reason for residing in Italy.

How to get your codice fiscale?

While it might seem like navigating a labyrinth at first glance, getting a codice fiscale is much easier than expected. To get it, you can follow two routes.

1. Agenzia delle Entrate (if you are in Italy)

For EU citizens:

If you are already in the “bel paese,” you will need to forward your request at the Agenzia delle Entrate.

Required documents
  • A valid passport to verify your identity.
  • A permesso di soggiorno (if applicable) to verify your residency status in Italy.
Application process

To get your codice fiscale you will have to download the application form (Modello AA) from the website of the Agenzia delle Entrate and fill it out with your basic information, including name, address, date of birth, and reason for requesting the codice fiscale. After completing the form, you’ll have to submit the application to your local Agenzia delle Entrate office together with any required documents and applicable fees. Depending on the workload, you might receive it on the spot or be notified by mail within a few days.

For non-EU citizens:

Non-EU citizens need to go to the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione to obtain the codice fiscale.

Required documents
  • A valid passport to verify your identity.
  • A permesso di soggiorno (if applicable) to verify your residency status in Italy.
Application process

To get your codice fiscale, you will need to visit the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione. Complete the application form provided at the office with your basic information, including name, address, date of birth, and reason for requesting the codice fiscale. Submit the completed form along with the required documents. Depending on the workload, you might receive it on the spot or be notified by mail within a few days.

2. Italian consulate/embassy (if you are in your home country)

If you are not yet in Italy but are planning to visit soon, you also have the chance to request your codice fiscale at the Italian consulate or embassy in your home country. This way you’ll have it before coming to the “bel paese” and will have a much easier life when completing essential tasks.

Required documents

  • A valid passport to verify your identity.
  • Any additional documents requested by your local consulate or embassy, which may also include proof of address in your home country, proof of travel arrangements to Italy, and translated versions of documents not originally in Italian.

Application process

To get your codice fiscale before coming to Italy, you’ll have to contact the local Italian consulate or embassy and get the latest information on application procedures and specific requirements. You’ll then have to gather all the required documents and might need to translate any documents that are originally not in Italian. Following the specific instructions provided, you’ll have to mail the application or submit it in person. As processing times can vary, you’ll be notified by mail once the codice fiscale is ready.

What are the fees?

Getting a codice fiscale involves minimal financial barriers depending on your chosen route.

Applying through the Agenzia delle Entrate within Italy typically carries minimal or no fees, making it a cost-effective option, especially if you need your codice fiscale quickly. On the other hand, applying through the Italian consulate or embassy in your home country you might incur in processing or administrative fees. Therefore, it’s recommended to contact the consulate or embassy for specific information on any applicable charges to avoid surprises.

How long does it take to get a codice fiscale?

The timeframe for acquiring your codice fiscale varies depending on your chosen method.

If you’re applying through the Agenzia delle Entrate, you’ll notice that the processing time is quite fast. You might even receive it on the spot or within a few days of submitting your application thus making the process ideal if you have an urgent need. However, applying through the Italian consulate or embassy in your home country can have potentially longer processing times due to workload variations. Be prepared for a longer wait, especially if they are experiencing high volumes of applications!

A few considerations

  • Verification: as soon as you receive your codice fiscale, verify its validity online through the Agenzia delle Entrate website using the "Tessera sanitaria / Codice fiscale" verification service.
  • Seek assistance: if you have difficulties with any phase of the application process, you can seek assistance from the Agenzia delle Entrate via their website, phone hotline, or by visiting their office in person. Your local Italian consulate or embassy and even universities’ international student offices might also offer support.
  • Stay informed: since regulations and procedures can change, you’d better  visit the official websites of the Agenzia delle Entrate and of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs before initiating the application process.

Obtaining your codice fiscale might seem like a hurdle, but with the right information and preparation, it can be navigated smoothly. By understanding the process, choosing the path that best suits your situation, and utilizing available resources, you can secure it and step confidently into your Italian adventure!
